Revista Luiz Gama is the magazine of ideas published by Juventude Livre, with articles, regular columns and essays written by members and guests.
Who was Luiz Gama
Luiz Gonzaga Pinto da Gama was born in Salvador, Brazil, in 1830, the son of a free African woman, Luísa Mahin. At age ten he was illegally sold into slavery by his own father and taken to São Paulo.
He learned to read at 17, gathered proof that he had been born free and escaped. He worked as a copyist and clerk, taught himself law and began practicing as a rábula, a lawyer without a degree. In court he used the Empire's own laws, such as the 1831 law banning the slave trade, to free hundreds of people.
He published Primeiras Trovas Burlescas de Getulino in 1859 and wrote for the São Paulo press until his death in 1882.
